Byron Corrales, farm Los Pinos (NI)

Los Pinos (The Pines) is an agro-ecologic farm at 1,300 masl with a lot of micro organism diversity located in Aranjuez community a zone of Matagalpa. Aranjuez is a beautiful place in the heart of natural reserve El Arenal with an amazing rain forest microclimate perfect for coffee. The community of Aranjuez provides water and electricity to more than a half of Matagalpa city.

Corrales family began with coffee in the 80’s right after the Nicaraguan revolution. They took the organic path because they want to have a farm that can be sustainable and economically profitable for next generations.

They have choosen the name Los Pinos because at the beginning Byron Corrales and his father planted a small forest of pines at the top of the farm to stabilize the soil erosion and to catch the rain water. Currently this small pine forest supplies all the water needs of Los Pinos. They began to grow classic coffee varieties like caturra, catuai, maracaturra, java and for few last years catimor and lempira.

The cows and more than 60 different types of trees are an important part of Byron’s farm. The cow manure, organic material from the farm and different minerals are mixed in a certain proportion and turned into a great bocachi which fertilize all the coffee trees several times a year. Due to this special care coffees from Los Pinos taste incredible!
